Mid-Scale Solar
STCs Now Available for Commercial Solar Systems over 100kW to 1MW
Systems over 100kW, installed from 1 October 2026, can now create STCs.
Incentives will be available mid-to-late November.
“We expect a lot of systems to get installed over the next four years because this is our window of opportunity.“

The new numbers make stalled deals close. You now have the ability to install the system you should have installed in the first place.
What’s changing
The SRES cap for STCs has lifted from 100kW to 1MW, and the regulations are in place.
Systems installed on or after 1 October 2026 are eligible.
STC claims for mid-scale systems open mid-to-late November 2026, once the regulator’s systems are ready. October installs aren’t lost. They’re claimed when the window opens.
Deeming is fixed at five years to 31 December 2030. It won’t step down each year the way small-scale deeming does.
Sites with more than 1MW of solar in total get no STCs. LGCs remain the route.
What’s in it for you and your customers?
For years, commercial systems were capped at 100kW because that's where the returns peaked. Now businesses can size solar to their actual load, up to 1MW. That covers agriculture, food and beverage processing, and smaller manufacturers alike.
For many sites, STCs cover around 20% of system cost, bringing payback under four years. That opens conversations that used to stall, like a tenant on a seven-year lease talking to their landlord about solar.

Is your project eligible?
The test is the total solar at the site, not just the new system. That includes existing related solar and any accredited power station on the same or adjoining sites.

Mid-scale solar STC FAQs
-
Solar systems over 100kW and up to 1MW installed on or after 1 October 2026 can create small-scale technology certificates (STCs) under the expanded SRES. Claims open mid-to-late November 2026.
-
For commercial solar systems between 100kW and 1MW, STCs typically cover around 20% of the upfront system cost. That brings payback under four years for some projects. Use our mid-scale solar STC calculator to get an indicative STC count for your project.
-
No. Systems installed from 1 October 2026 are still eligible. Their STCs are claimed once the Clean Energy Regulator opens the window in mid-to-late November.
-
No. Only systems installed on or after 1 October 2026 are eligible. Existing solar on the same or adjoining site still counts toward the 1MW total capacity limit for any new system.
-
Yes, where the project qualifies. STCs are a federal scheme, so they can be claimed alongside VEECs in Victoria and Peak Reduction Certificates (PRCs) in NSW. Within the VEEC scheme, Activity 47 and SMM4 can't be combined.
-
Five years, fixed, to 31 December 2030. Unlike small-scale solar deeming, it doesn't step down each year.
