We spent two days at All-Energy Australia at the Melbourne Convention and Exhibition Centre, on stand C118
We were there to talk commercial solar, batteries and C&I solar incentives with installers. For anyone working on larger systems, the biggest change right now is the SRES expansion into mid-scale solar.
Why we brought panels from the 1980s
The retro PV modules on the stand were a talking point, and a useful reference. Early modules were small, low-output and expensive per watt. Today a single commercial solar install can run to hundreds of kilowatts.
GET has been creating and trading certificates, including STCs, for 19 years, through most of that change. We have seen how each shift in technology and scheme rules changes what installers need from a certificate partner. The SRES expansion is the next one.
Mid-scale solar and the SRES expansion
Until now, the Small-scale Renewable Energy Scheme (SRES) has covered solar systems up to 100kW. The SRES expansion allows systems between 100kW and 1MW to earn STC incentives, bringing mid-scale solar into the same scheme as residential and small commercial systems.
For commercial installers, this opens up new opportunities across the C&I solar market, from warehouses and schools to farms and mid-sized manufacturers. These projects typically involve longer timelines and larger certificate volumes, making how and when you get paid for STCs an important part of managing project cash flow.
