Australia’s New 2035 Climate Target, What It Means for You
The ambitious but achievable goal is designed to tackle climate change while unlocking big opportunities for clean energy, jobs, and investment.
The Government has announced a new 2035 target to cut emissions by 62–70% below 2005 levels. This means big growth in renewables, batteries, EVs, and clean fuels, backed by billions in investment. For our industry, it signals more opportunities, faster uptake, and a stronger push for compliant, future-ready installs.
How will we get there?
The bulk of the reductions will come from five key areas:
Clean electricity: more renewable generation, supported by batteries and new transmission.
Electrification & efficiency: better energy efficiency, EV adoption, and smarter appliances.
Clean fuels: growth in green hydrogen and low-carbon fuels.
New technologies: scaling up innovation through Future Made in Australia initiatives.
Carbon removals: rewarding landholders and businesses that capture and store carbon.
The Government is also backing this with major investments, including:
$5 billion Net Zero Fund to help industries cut emissions.
$2 billion for CEFC to lower energy costs.
$1.1 billion for clean fuel production in Australia.
$40 million to accelerate EV charging rollout.
$85 million to help households and businesses save energy.
Why this matters:
Stronger climate action means more certainty for investors and faster clean energy growth.
It creates new jobs and industries, keeping Australia competitive in the global shift to net zero.
It helps ensure a safer climate for future generations.
Australia isn’t acting alone – nearly 80% of the world’s GDP is already covered by net zero commitments, and global clean energy investment is expected to hit $2 trillion. This target positions us to capture our share of that growth.
In short, this plan means more renewables, more batteries, more opportunities – and a clearer pathway to a low-carbon future.
